Lower carbon footprint paint for interior and exterior applications
In a market where demand for more sustainable products continues to rise, consumers are unwilling to compromise on performance. Bio-attributed materials produced through a mass balance approach offer a pragmatic pathway to lower carbon footprint solutions, while enabling drop-in implementation without requalification.
In parallel, to support brand owners in developing high-performance bio-based paints, Arkema provides a full range of resins and additives. For example, combining a 97% bio-based waterborne alkyd with a waterborne polyurethane thickener allows formulators to deliver durable paints with long-lasting color strength that match the performance of fossil-based products.

USE CASE: Achieve lower carbon footprint decorative paints
Boosting circularity with REAFREE® recycled-based powder coating resins
REAFREE® powder coating resins now incorporate up to 40% post-consumer recycled content sourced from end-of-life packaging waste, marking a step change in circularity for high-performance coatings. By leveraging recycled PET as a feedstock, this new generation of REAFREE® materials reduces reliance on fossil raw materials and lowers the product carbon footprint by up to 20%, while preserving the intrinsic solvent-free and low-waste advantages of powder coatings.
Recycled content = (mass of recycled material / mass of product)*100, calculated according to ISO 14021:2016 / The post-consumer PET used in the REAFREE® range is a plastic that can no longer be mechanically recycled into its primary usage within the packaging industry. / PCF cradle-to-gate including biogenic uptake according to ISO 14040, 14044 and 14067, calculated vs fossil equivalent.

USE CASE: Advance sustainability with powder coatings
(1) A bio-based product is wholly or partly derived from biomass. The bio-based content is the %
breakdown based on a mass ratio following NF16785
(2) Mass Balance: Mass balance provides manufacturers with a methodology to track the certified materials as they move along the value chain and attribute the inputs of a production process, to outputs of that production process through certified bookkeeping. This distinct accounting method verifies that the certified feedstock has replaced an equivalent quantity of fossil raw materials at the beginning of the supply chain and can be attributed to the product-to-be-sold, ensuring that both input and output are balanced. (source ISCC).
A bio-attributed content indicates that the use of a bio-based feedstock has been ascribed using a mass-balance methodology. The bio-attributed content is the % breakdown based on the ISCC+ methodology calculation. It is a clear distinction to materials in which the bio-based content can be verified using the radiocarbon method.
